Are UGG Boots made in Australia?

Posted by UGG Since 1974 on

It is a common misconception that all UGG boots are made in Australia. The truth is, the majority of the world’s UGG boots (about 96%) are made in Asia (in countries like China, Vietnam and the Philippines). It is possible to still buy genuine, Australian made UGG boots, but they aren’t easy to find.

If you’re shocked to learn this, you might also be surprised to know that in Australia, ‘UGG’ is not a brand, but a product. This means that anyone in Australia can make and sell UGG boots, and they don’t necessarily need to be made in Australia.

To make matters even more confusing, in most countries outside of Australia, the word ‘UGG’ is trademarked by a singular, American owned company. Known as Deckers Outdoor Corporation, Deckers ‘UGG’ stores are dotted around the world, but none of their UGG boots are made in Australia.

So between Deckers Outdoor Corporation and the masses of Australian companies selling UGGs which are not made in Australia, it is no easy feat to find a reputable, original and genuine pair of Australian made UGG boots – but they do exist!

With so many different versions of UGG boots on the market, it’s important to know how to choose an Australian made pair. Of course, you can make sure you purchase UGGs by UGG Since 1974, but if you want to know what to check for yourself, here are our tips.

How do I know if my UGG boots at home are made in Australia?

If you’d like to know whether the UGGs you have purchased in the past were made in Australia, there’s an easy way to check.

Simply look inside your UGG boots for a white, fabric sewn-in label, usually held in place by one of the side seams of the UGG boots. At UGG Since 1974, each and every pair we make has a 'Made in Australia' sew-in label.

If your sew-in label says ‘Made in Australia’, you’ve purchased a genuine pair of Australian made UGG boots. If your sew-in label reveals a different country of origin, like China, Vietnam, the Philippines, then your existing UGG boots were not made in Australia.

If there is no sew-in label at all, chances are that your boots were not made in Australia either. This is because Australian manufacturers proudly display the place of origin of their products, so if a label is missing altogether, it has likely been removed.

How can I buy Australian made UGG boots?

The good news is that we have been manufacturing UGG boots in Australia for almost 50 years, so if you’re looking for UGG boots that are actually made in Australia, you’ve come to the right place. All of our products are available online, and we ship around the world.

With so many different versions of UGG boots on the market, it’s important to know how to choose an Australian made pair, and the best place to start is by checking for the sew-in label. If you are buying online, you won’t get the luxury of feeling, touching and inspecting your boots, so you’ll need to look a little harder to find any Australian made pair.

Check for information about where the manufacturing workshop is based, checked for live information about the manufacturing process, and consider the price (generally, if the price is too good to be true, it usually is).

We are an Australian family-owned company based on the sunny Gold Coast in Queensland, employing more than 30 staff to handcraft Australian Made UGG boots from start to finish. With every customer that comes through our doors, we always do our very best to educate each one on how to determine which UGGs they have bought or buying were made within Australia.

You can watch us handcrafting UGG boots daily by following our Instagram @UGGSince1974, and if you order a pair online, you might even be lucky enough to see your boots being made by hand.

  • If I see a label that reads “Made by Ugg Australia” I would immediately assume the boots were made in Australia. I was shocked to learn from a YouTube clip of A Current Affair that Ugg Australia is a US corporation that makes Ugg-labelled boots in China! And that corporation is suing the manufacturer of Uggs in Australia for using the name, in order to put them out of business and gain the monopoly.

  • I have owned a few pairs of Ugg’s. Last winter my black classic Ugg’s ripped at the back seam which totally surprised me. I’ve spent 2 days searching for a W7 size only to find (0) I finally dug into the boot only to discover that under the Made by Ugg Australia, it says made in China ?? All this disappointment because I simply wanted a wide black classic tall pair of Ugg’s to replace these. So is there such an Ugg on the market? And if so, where? Now I’m going to check my other pairs and see where they were made?

  • YES, but very excited for the pairs I ordered for myself, friends, and family that are all going to the U.S.
